About

Seven years at the operational core

Good SAP administration is judged by what doesn’t happen: no outages, no missed upgrades, no fire drills. That reliability has been the job for seven years.

SAP, short for Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing, is the enterprise software that runs the back office (finance, supply chain, operations) for most large businesses, and BASIS is the technical layer that keeps it installed, patched and running. Seven years in that discipline have spanned three different industries: learning large landscapes inside Cognizant’s global delivery organisation, then nearly three years as technical consultant to an Indian pharmaceutical manufacturer, pairing SAP administration with business data analysis and reporting for its operations and management functions, and now coordinating landscapes and upgrades as a consultant at EnvironSens. Each step added a new layer to what I was accountable for.

The next pull is toward automation, a thread that runs back to my computer science degree’s coursework in AI, machine learning and natural language processing. I wrote a Python script to parse SAP application logs and surface errors, worked through data mining on transactional data, and in 2025 qualified as an Intel-certified facilitator for AI for Future Workforce, a credential to teach applied and ethical AI, not only study it. My interest now is the layer above administration: intelligent systems that make enterprise operations less manual.

How the work has changed shape

Seven years in the same discipline, applied across three different industries, each one adding a new layer of business responsibility.

    Day-to-day custodian of SAP landscapes, keeping them current, coordinated and diagnosable.

    • Coordinate transport requests and landscape alignment across dev, QA and production.
    • Run kernel upgrades, patch updates and enhancement package installs; monitor performance and resource use.
    • Diagnose issues from application logs, the trigger for the log-analysis script below.

    Technical consultant to an Indian pharmaceutical manufacturer, pairing SAP administration with business analysis for operations and management.

    • Managed SAP system administration, user access and system performance for the business.
    • Analyzed business data and prepared reports supporting operational and management functions.

    First role out of engineering school, on the installation and upgrade side of large SAP programmes.

    • Installed and configured SAP NetWeaver ABAP and Java systems.
    • Performed SAP support-package upgrades (SPAM/SAINT) and patch management.
    • Executed installations and upgrades using SAP’s standard provisioning tools (SWPM, SUM).

Automation

Turning SAP log triage into a script

Challenge
Manually scanning SAP logs for the signal that matters, often while a system is degraded.
What I did
Built a Python script to parse application logs and flag system errors automatically.
Outcome
A repeatable diagnostic tool: administration’s first step toward instrumentation.

Administering a cloud SAP landscape

Challenge
A client’s Cloud Landscape Management environment manages system state and transport differently from an on-premise one.
What I did
Ran system monitoring and transport management inside the cloud landscape for the client.
Outcome
Core BASIS practice extended to a managed cloud landscape, the direction enterprise SAP is heading.
Analytics

Finding fraudulent patterns in transaction data

Challenge
Fraud in transactional data is rare, unlabelled, and easy to miss with summary statistics alone.
What I did
Ran exploratory analysis and applied data-mining techniques in Orange to surface fraud patterns.
Outcome
Hands-on experience turning a business question into a data problem.
